These things should be given to a teenager as he/she enters college, maybe even work out a work plan, you pay half, I pay half. But this would not be a good Christmas gift. I'm just being honestly, no teenager wants that for Christmas. And all teenagers are different, so not everyone will want the same thing. The best way is money (like you mentioned) a gift card to a store that they like, (which shows that you are taking notice to what they like) or maybe even ask one of their close friends if they have mentioned anything.
